Air Raid Shelters

WAG has been asked to record the air raid shelters at two junior schools.

23/07/2002, St Luke's Junior School Emma, Jan, Sandra, Graham and Martin did this one. There is only one shelter here so we thought it would be a good one to start with.

A hard day's work but worth it. We transferred the benchmark from the top of Goldthorn Hill to the foundation stone on the school wall, laid out a site grid, drew elevations of the east and west facing ends of the shelter and the door and measured its profile both lengthwise and cross section. The door was firmly screwed on so we decided not to try to enter it. As it turns out, this shelter is very similar to those at Warstones so we may be able to extrapolate the inside of those.

09/08/2002, Warstones Junior School This school has 9 air raid shelters for us to survey. It was a small team this time, just Jan, Sue and Martin. The weather started off well. We transferred the benchmark from the side of a house on Warstones Road to the school flagpost and were just doing the return measurements to check when the heavens opened. After a very soggy sandwich we decided to call it a day. Just as well, it got even wetter!

13/08/2002, Warstones Junior School A better day weatherwise. Emma, Graham and Martin today, Jan arrived later. We decided to concentrate on the 8 shelters to the rear of the school. Another good day's work. By the end we had transferred the temporary benchmark from the school flagpost to the rear of the school, inspected and photographed the insides of 3 of the shelters and drawn a plan of all of them - and got a sun tan! There are some galvanised iron square buckets which we think are toilets and are looking for someone to draw them. Bryony?

21/08/2002, Warstones Junior School The weather keeps getting better and better. A good turnout today, Jan, Emma, Sandra, Neil, Chris and Martin. Jan and Sandra drew a wall inside an air raid shelter while Neil and Martin measured the profile of shelter number 2 and drew a plan of it. Emma drew some elevations and supervised. Chris popped in at lunchtime.

31/10/2002, Warstones Junior School Isn't it frustrating when almost everything is done and you have to wait until half term to complete it? Well that particular Thursday had the best of the weather that week so we (Emma, Jan, Graham and Sandra) were lucky. The front air raid shelter was planned and some photographs taken again with a surveying rod to indicate the scale. All the field work is now done (except for some photographs at St Lukes) and we (Emma) can work on the report.

Spring 2003 This report has been written up.

Autumn 2007 The report for St Luke's (in Microsoft Works) was scanned into Word so we have a valid copy.
