Saggar Works at Caughley

Preliminary work including geophysics and a landscape survey has suggested the probable location of the saggar works which supplied the porcelain factory at Caughley. Limited excavation will be done in August, the main purpose will be to confirm the location of the building and to identify its shape. It is hoped that pottery finds will show if the saggar works started life producing pottery. Details of excavation dates are on the WAG activities page.
6/7/2003 A succesful day at Caughley with Chris (site director), Jan, Emma, Martin and Carol. Yes, we were allowed to stop for lunch!

Jan and Carol busy in Trench 1
13/7/2003 No digging today, we went to Stonehenge
20/7/2003 Diggers today were Chris, Jan, Sue, Emma, Clive, Martin and Roger Edmundsen. Wot, eating again! Do they do no work?

The previous dig provided more questions than answers so there was nothing for it but to enlarge the trench.

Good old Roger!

03/08/2003 Lord Forester and Family graced us with a visit. He seemed pleased with what we were doing
10/08/2003 Lady Forester came today and granted us an extension.
17/08/2003 Sadly we had to put the dig to bed. Today we had an incredible electrical storm, the first bad weather for a long time. Hopefully, we will be allowed back next year to follow up some ideas we have about the site.
