Wolverhampton Archaeology Group

Education Project.

Wolverhampton Archaeology Group is able to offer “Introduction to Archaeology” sessions in schools.
Aims:
  1. For children to gain knowledge of the work of an archaeologist.
  2. For children to begin to understand that artefacts help us in our understanding of the past.
Activities include:
  • An introduction to stratigraphy. Using a model to illustrate that the lowest layers contain the oldest artefacts.
  • Working out the diameter of a pot using a pottery chart.
  • Observing pottery sherds closely and attempting to work out what the pot looked like when complete.
  • Looking for identifying marks on objects such as pipe bowls.
  • Handling small artefacts from different periods e.g. flints, pottery sherds, pistol shot, coins, bottles.
  • Activities are accompanied, where appropriate, by worksheets. For more information about the Education project or to book a session, please contact Carole Griffiths: Telephone: 01543 820648 E-mail: cag18uk@yahoo.co.uk
