Wolverhampton Archaeology Group
Education Project.
Wolverhampton Archaeology Group is able to offer “Introduction to Archaeology” sessions in schools.
Aims:
- For children to gain knowledge of the work of an archaeologist.
- For children to begin to understand that artefacts help us in our understanding of the past.
Activities include:
An introduction to stratigraphy. Using a model to illustrate that the lowest layers contain the oldest
artefacts.
Working out the diameter of a pot using a pottery chart.
Observing pottery sherds closely and attempting to work out what the pot looked like when complete.
Looking for identifying marks on objects such as pipe bowls.
Handling small artefacts from different periods e.g. flints, pottery sherds, pistol shot, coins, bottles.
Activities are accompanied, where appropriate, by worksheets.
